What is organic food

For food to be classified as organic food it has to have been produced in a certain way by adhering to organic production standards. This means that where crops are concerned they are produced and grown without conventional pesticides, artificial fertilisers, human waste, or sewage sludge being utilised. Organic food production standards also ensure that organic food is processed without ionizing radiation or by using food additives. Where animals are concerned, organic food means that animals have been reared without the routine use of antibiotics or growth hormones.

Additionally in most countries, organic food produce ensures that the food has not been genetically modified. Currently, certain countries, such as the United States, the European Union and Japan require food organic producers to have the necessary organic certification in order for them to market organic food.

Nowadays, as organic foods are recongnised as being more widely available it is no wonder that organic food sales are on the increase. It is predicted that growth will continue, resulting in many more companies wishing to enter into the organic food market.
