dogs require a variety of nutrients to live
a healthy life. Food for dogs should contain

that their are factors which will depict your
dog's unique nutritional requirements, such
as its size, breed and stage in life, among
other things.

Food for dogs
- energy
It is suggested that
in food for dogs there are three major dietary
components which provide energy: carbohydrates,
protein and fats. Dogs require a certain amount
of energy to sustain the normal activities
of their daily lives but there are factors
such as growth, pregnancy, lactation, and
exercise, which naturally increases the energy
needs.
Food for dogs
- meat
Research has shown
that dogs are
descended from omnivores and therefore are
not strict meat eaters. Although it is suggested
that many dogs may prefer animal-based protein,
it is possible for them to thrive on a vegetarian
diet. However food for dogs in the form of
protein, be it either from plant or animal
sources, should make up at least 10% of their
total calories. This can increase to as much
as 50% more in older dogs, because they require
more protein to maintain their reserves.
Food for dogs
- water
Research has shown
that dogs experience a continual loss of water
through skin, urine, faeces and breathing,
and this must be replaced frequently. It is
always suggested that dogs have adequate water
in their diet and access to fresh water in
order to quench their thirst when needed.
Note that water quantities may also need to
be increased by factors such as temperature,
activity and the type of food for dogs being
given.
Food for dogs
- minerals and vitamins
It has been discovered
that certain vitamins and minerals play a
part in the regulation of the dog's bodily
processes, however, care will need to be taken
to ensure that correct quantities are taken.
